Wisdom Teeth

Wisdom teeth are the large molars found at the very back of your mouth. These molars usually erupt between the ages of 17-24, however, for some individuals they may erupt at any stage of life. Wisdom teeth are well known for their painful growth. The issue occurs if the patient does not have enough space in their mouth for the teeth to erupt into. In this situation, as the teeth grow they can become wedged in or impacted, causing an increased risk of infection and inflammation in the surrounding tissue.

Common symptoms of infected wisdom teeth include:

  • Red swollen gums
  • Pain
  • Limited jaw opening
  • Bad taste/smell
  • Generally feeling unwell – nausea as a result of infection

At Coomera Family Dental we ensure those of our patients with limited space for wisdom teeth are well cared for. We recommend early wisdom teeth removal for the following reasons:

  • To reduce the chance of infection & prevent pain
  • To remove any food traps created by the eruption of the wisdom teeth
  • To prevent decay in the wisdom teeth & the adjacent teeth
  • To avoid formation of cysts
  • To reduce crowding and reduce the risk of undoing previous orthodontic work
  • To reduce the risk of jaw fracture during contact sports

At Coomera Family Dental we will help to explain the removal process and help you to avoid these unpleasant situations.
